Updates on Frugal Labs

Over the past year, Betty Huerta, who leads the Bootcamp course in the Frugal Innovation Minor, has been spearheading research into the global landscape of frugal innovation communities, with a specific focus on initiatives within the Netherlands. The goal of the International Centre for Frugal Innovation (ICFI) is to establish a dedicated lab that bridges research and practice. This lab will serve as a hub for exploring the decision-making processes of frugal innovators as they develop new, cost-effective, and resource-efficient solutions. It will also facilitate the creation of applied research, frameworks, and tools to further the field of frugal innovation on a global scale.

Early Pilot Projects: Sustainable Housing and Digital Solutions
ICFI is in the early stages of launching its first pilot projects, focusing on two key areas: sustainable housing and digital innovation. Collaborations with partners in Nairobi will explore frugal housing innovations through a thesis lab project, addressing the critical need for affordable, sustainable housing solutions in urban areas. In parallel, ICFI will work with partners in Santa Clara to investigate the development of frugal digital solutions, with Prof. Saradindu Bhaduri playing a key role in this effort. Both initiatives are designed to tackle pressing challenges in regions where cost-effective, innovative approaches are essential for sustainable development.

Mobile Labs: Taking Frugal Innovation Anywhere
In line with the ICFI’s experimental and adaptive approach, we are working on mobile labs. The concept involves creating three or four "mobile suitcases" equipped with the tools needed to support the development of frugal innovations in various locations. This adaptable model would allow researchers and innovators to test and implement solutions in diverse environments, making frugal innovation more accessible and practical wherever it is most needed.
