Urban transitions and implications for the Global South: can we grasp the opportunities?
The pace of urban development in global south is not matching the needs. There are a host of challenges including deficits in capital investments, operational costs and inequalities. Cities also continue to be areas of concentrated resource consumption. This results in environmental degradation in the cities and beyond.
This panel will discuss the notions of ‘urban’ and ‘cities’ in the context of innovations that offer alternative development approaches in urban spaces. The key question in transition is what radical system changes are necessary to harness the potential and expand solutions that can enhance equity, address climate change, create sustainable cities and build resilient urban systems?
