This Week: Quadruple Helix & Frugal Innovation in New Delhi
From February 17 to 21, 2025, the course Quadruple Helix and Strengthening Knowledge Interactions for Frugal Innovation is taking place at the JNU Convention Centre in New Delhi. Organized by the International Centre for Frugal Innovation (ICFI) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), this course brings together experts, researchers, and professionals to explore the role of collaboration in frugal innovation.
What is Frugal Innovation?
Frugal Innovation is an alternative approach to innovation that goes beyond technology. It focuses on smart, simple, and affordable solutions. Instead of linking innovation to high costs and overconsumption, frugal innovation strives to create more impact with fewer resources.
The Quadruple Helix: Collaboration for Sustainable Innovation
This course highlights the Quadruple Helix model, where government, industry, academia, and society collaborate to develop innovative solutions. Known in the Netherlands as the Dutch Diamond, this model has been successfully applied in sectors such as water management and agro-food but has faced challenges in areas like energy and shipbuilding.
Course Highlights
- Comparing the Netherlands & India: While frugal innovation is widely practiced by local communities and businesses in India, the Netherlands has extensive experience with multi-stakeholder collaboration and policy development.
- Interactive Format: From theory sessions and case studies to a simulation game where participants develop their own Quadruple Helix strategy for India.
- Target Audience: Students, researchers, policymakers, and professionals from businesses and NGOs.
This week, participants will explore how knowledge exchange and collaboration can foster sustainable, context-specific innovations. The course is led by experts Peter Knorringa (ICFI, EUR-ISS) and Saradindu Bhaduri (ICFI-JNU).
