Affordability of nutritious food through business model interventions

Access to food is a growing global issue, deserving the attention from academia. Not only is the lack of access to food a problem in itself, a complicating issue is the access to nutritious food. While the first leads to hunger, the second may lead to diseases relating to over-consumption which is a growing health hazard. Sietze Vellema and Cees Peter van den Brink have investigated the affordability of nutritious food, relating the debate to frugal innovation.

Their research, written as part of the Partnership Resource Centre's Working Paper Series, was financed by CFIA and sheds light on inclusive food provision to lower income consumers. Business model intervention is necessary in achieving this goal. The report looks at several case studies in food processing companies in Ethiopia and Benin.
